It's my party and I'll eat cake if I want to!

Today is my BIRTHDAY!

I don't always celebrate it actually, but I'm trying to embrace moments in my life a little more often and celebrate with things that really make me happy!  This year it was a Harry Potter dinner party with friends and kiddos!  We made sausage rolls, herbology bites, treacle tarts, spider eggs, had proper crackers to pull at the table and of course, a perfectly appropriate birthday cake.  (Bless my girls for being so thoughtful!)  My friend K even went and got bottles of Pumpkin Juice and Butterbeer - it was a wonderful night!  Here's to surviving (and even enjoying 44 years!)

L's Birthday Quilt

I pledged last year that I wasn't going to do any more bookshelf style quilts for a little while because they are so much work!  Of course, that's before my sweet daughter-in-law mentioned how much she loved my girl's quilts and would love to have her own!  So....  one more was put together... with lots of Pirates of the Carribean patterns (Jack Sparrow, the Squid, Ship), Jack Skellington and Sally, and of course Harry Potter patterns.

Apple green edges, lots of new patterns from fandominstitches.com Harry Potter design Invitational!

Checking out the Marauder's Map

I backed this one in minky material with no batting (we live in the south), and it worked out really well!

So glad that she enjoys it! I hope she'll have lots of ongoing comfort from it!

Lollybraining - Dr. Who

In the midst of my perusing the interwebs.... I found this gorgeous quilt from Soma Acharya over at Whims and Fancies.

Look at it!  Just look at it!!

I'm pretty sure this is in my future.

Absolutely Stunning!

Sharing with others- Teaching Others to Paper Piece

I've got a lot of sweet comments and compliments from local friends who like to see what I've been up to - a few with kids who have their own fandom loves, and each time they say "I could never do that, all those pieces!".  This year I pledged to see if I couldn't share some of the love I got when I first started by passing on what I know to others.

That's right - it's my very first ever, beginner paper piecing quilting class.

So.... coming April 23rd, in connection with the women's auxiliary group at our church (aka Relief Society), these women will get the guts of paper piecing.

scary.

Rather than dive right into fandom things, we're going with a littler simpler pattern...  This one (Nell's Star) is beautiful and a good beginning place since it's one corner, repeated four times, and then joined to give the star effect.

It also serves to kill two birds with one stone.  I'd love to have each woman make a star to donate toward our GIRL quilt for our Christmas charity quilt donation, rather than me just making another quilt.  I think that letting each woman pick her own color palette, and sashing the whole thing with some kind of black or gray that will let the colors pop!

More updates to come!

Postscript
I was really unprepared for the wonderful response, interest and committed sign ups from these women - and I'm looking forward to sharing things.  Keep me in your prayers!!!

Star Wars! (pattern testing)

Fandom in stitches put up a call for Star Wars patterns and got a BEVY of responses.  These are the two patterns I tested, and I love them!  Plans now laid for the BOY version of our charity quilt to be donated this coming December.  (Insert happy dance here)

Light Sabers designed by Gretchen Kohlhaas

Death Star designed by Kristi Lehane
